Police officers are human beings and are not infallible. Sometimes they will act inappropriately, which may have consequences for the officer, the officer’s agency, family, and the public.
When an officer does act inappropriately, we don’t repeat that allegation over and over again. We are not concerned with media-biased or tainted reporting of the alleged incident. We focus on finding out why the officer allegedly acted inappropriately.
If an officer is found to have committed an act classified as misconduct, we will review all aspects of the incident, review all records, and interview all parties involved. Psychological factors, such as the inability to self-regulate and stress, can affect an officer’s conduct.
If we can identify those factors, we can assist in securing the proper psychological help to assist the officer in regaining a good state of mental health. This can differentiate between saving a good officer or throwing them to the curb.
